Our annual pre-order period for Phigvel’s unparalleled horsehide engineer boots is now open, and runs through the end of April. These boots represent a refined take on classic engineer boots, and they’re impeccably constructed from vegetable tanned hindquarter horsehide. The base of the leather (in both color options) is dyed brown, then hand-painted with Phigvel’s original dyes and oils, providing an incredibly rich character that develops and ages beautifully. Last season we hosted a special shop-in-shop at Hickoree’s Floor Two featuring Japanese retailer Journal Standard. The event was highlighted by an incredible range of products developed collaboratively by Journal Standard and The Hill-Side. This spring, we’re excited to present a brand new lineup of Journal Standard and The Hill-Side shirts and pointed ties, based on a selection of intricately dyed and woven indigo fabrics from Japan.

There are fourteen pieces in the collection, starting with button-down shirts from Journal Standard, which use four beautiful indigo fabrics from The Hill-Side's fabric archive. Using a historical printing technique called “discharge printing,” these fabrics are dyed solid indigo, then printed with a “discharge,” or bleaching, paste to remove the dye, leaving lighter-colored designs on the indigo base. Whether it’s used to render unexpected palm leaves and tropical flowers, or more traditional polka dot and floral patterns, this technique produces designs with great depth and character.

We’re also excited to have two-pocket work shirts from J.S. Homestead — Journal Standard’s vintage-inspired brand — and pointed ties from The Hill-Side, made from five outstanding, skein-dyed indigo “Matsusaka Momen” fabrics. Normally used to make kimonos and other traditional Japanese garments, this fabric is entirely handmade in Japan, through a laborious process involving hand-dipping skeins, or loops, of cotton yarn in indigo vats, arranging the yarns in characteristic stripes and plaids, and weaving the fabric on antique, narrow looms.

A roll of finished Matsusaka Momen fabric traditionally measures about 12” wide and 10 yards long - considerably smaller than rolls of modern fabric. Due to these small dimensions, the shirts are constructed from twice as many panels of fabric as usual. It’s a tour de force of creative construction and pattern matching, and the beautiful, uneven colors of the fabrics make for truly outstanding shirts and ties.
